Dental Crowns

At Neel Dentistry, we offer a range of restorative treatments. One of the most common is the dental crown.

Otherwise known as a dental cap, a dental crown is designed to sit on top of, or as the name suggests ‘crown’, a damaged tooth, protecting and strengthening the entire tooth as a whole.

When is a crown used?

A dental crown is often used to restore a tooth that has been damaged due to decay or injury. In addition, a crown can be used to enhance the appearance of a tooth.

What materials are crowns made from?

There are several different materials used to create crowns. Crowns are typically made from precious metals (e.g. gold), porcelain or ceramic bonded to metal.

How long will the treatment take?

We tend to carry out the crown procedure over the course of two appointments, which are usually between one and two weeks apart. After preparation of the tooth, we will provide a temporary crown until our lab has fabricated the permanent crown.

How long does a crown last for?

Provided that care is taken to maintain your dental health, crowns often last between ten to twenty years. Although crowns themselves cannot be subject to decay, the tooth underneath and the teeth around the crown can. As such, it is extremely important to follow a good oral health and hygiene plan whilst attending regular check-up appointments. This will ensure that the join where the crown meets the tooth does not suffer from decay. Our hygienists will give you instructions on how to maintain an excellent oral hygiene plan.

Are crowns noticeable?

Visually, you will not be able to distinguish a dental crown from your natural teeth. We will match the colour of the crown to the surrounding teeth so that it looks completely natural.
