Dental implants

Dental implants are considered the most effective replacement for missing teeth. A dental implant emulates the root of a tooth, which can support a crown, a bridge or, using multiple implants, a full denture. Due to the biocompatible materials used, dental implants provide the most secure solution to one or more missing teeth.

What are dental implants and how do they work?

A dental implant is a small screw-like rod made of titanium, acting as a complete replacement for the root of a tooth. Titanium is a biocompatible metal that has the ability to osseointegrate, where the surrounding bone structure fuses tightly with the material. This grants dental implants a much improved longevity, often lasting over 30 years.

During the procedure, the gum is cut and folded back to reveal the underlying bone. A hole is then drilled into the jawbone. Once fitted, dental implants can support a variety of restorations, including:

  • Dental crowns, for the replacement of a single missing tooth
  • Dental bridges, when several teeth are in need of replacement
  • Dentures, to replace a full arch of teeth

Dental implants are a long-term solution for missing teeth and are designed to last a lifetime. Much like a typical crown or bridge, the shade is matched to the surrounding teeth, meaning dental implants cannot be distinguished from the teeth surrounding them.

How long does the dental implant process take?

The entire process takes around 3 months. It can take up to 6 weeks for the implant to completely integrate with the jawbone. If up to 3 implants are placed, temporary restorations will be provided until your implant has healed. Once the implant has integrated with the bone tissue, we will fit an abutment, to which we will attach the appropriate restoration.

Benefits of dental implants

  • Longevity: a dental implant can last over 30 years.
  • Stability: with dental implants, the entire tooth root is replaced, leading to stability that cannot be achieved with dentures alone.
  • Comfort: again, since the entire tooth is replaced, you will be able to eat, speak and live comfortably.
  • Aesthetics: dental implants look and feel like natural teeth, so nobody will be able to tell the difference.
